So I got up Saturday morning and left the wife and girls in the hotel to do there homework since they all had school on Monday morning. I knew what I wanted to do first thing in the morning and that was pay visits to 3 shops in Long Beach that I have a lot of respect for.

Stop number one is up on East 4th street in Long Beach to Razorbacks barbershop (3044 East 4th
My second stop of the morning was Hawleywood's Barbershop in Long Beach. It was a quite shop since everyone was out in Las Vegas for Viva Las Vegas.

Don Hawley and Hawleywood's really had a lot to do with changing the face of modern barbering and I had been wanting to visit one of the shop and so I finally go in to pay a visit to the Long Beach shop.
Last stop of the morning was Syndicate Barbershop down on Broadway. There is a reason for making this my final stop of the morning and that was to see and chat with Dylan Johnson.

The Syndicate has a little more room and host 6 chairs (I think). It was a comfortable and they work for the most part by appointment only, which they started doing near the end of last year.
Made the 30 minute drive to the shop, counted my cash drawer and started cleaning before opening the shop.

Several times I sweep and mop the shop, dust the whole shop and clean the windows. Right now while it is just me at the barbershop sometimes it takes me a little longer to make sure everything gets done but it gets done.

The first thing a customer sees when they walk in the door or more importantly sit at your station is how clean it is. For myself I work my butt off to keep a clean almost spotless workspace and I keep the shop as clean as I can. I want people to know they are coming into a shop where people take pride in what they do.

When I first started cutting hair in California the first shop I worked at had 8 chairs and was charging $4.50 for a haircut. Piles of hair on the floor and no care in people's work area. One day with a few minutes of down time I pulled the cushion out of my chair and there was almost a 1/2 of hair clippings wedged between the chair and the cushion (so gross). When you are doing 15-29 haircuts a day you need to change the jar of herbicide a little more often then normal and so I stated changing it daily. The owner did not appreciate this because she did not want to pay for more herbicide so I stated to bring my own barbicide so i could change it daily. The crazy old lady even had the nerve to say "I pay you to cut, not to clean".

If you are in a low volume shop it is easy to keep a clean shop and there is not excuse to have a dirty shop. If you work in a high volume shop at times it is a little more difficult but it is just as important to keep a clean shop/work space.

Clean tools, clean shop and a clean work space makes for a good work environment and happy customers (at least I hope).Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11023764758588611230noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7453521398143215703.post-10393508371779172592013-02-26T22:39:00.001-08:002013-03-07T21:24:28.730-08:00ANDIS Fade Clipper Disclaimer: Just because a clipper says "fade clipper" does not mean it is going to make you better at doing faded (or tapered) haircuts. There is no magic power to the clipper. Doing a tapered (faded) haircut takes alot of practice to get it down.

So I picked up the newest release from ANDIS. There new FADE Clipper and it caught my eye becuase of the shape of the clipper. It reminded me of the WAHL Senior that my buddy Victor swears by.

So I am not sure if this is replacing the ANDIS Fade Master that we have come to use, but it will do the job if this is the case.

These clippers are comfortable in the hands because of the ergonomic design. The blade is a #0000-#000 and gets pretty darn close and if you do a lot of bald fading the blade can be zero gapped. Heavy duty motor that will allow you to cut through wet and dry hair..

My complaints are small and one is they are a lot louder then ANDIS lets on. You need to adjust them to find that sweet spot but I still found them to be louder then the my Fade Masters (youngsters do not like loud clippers). Second problem that I had is that they are heavier then I was hoping they would be.

If you do a lot of fading the the important points out way what I consider negative points. Also do not forget ANDIS clippers are still made in the U.S. (big deal to me). The retail for the FADE Professional Clipper is less then $60 bucks. If you already own the Fade Masters do not worry about spending your money on these but if you do not own the Fade Masters and money is a little tight then these will do just fine.

Sometimes ya just gotta split

So this last weekend I locked up the shop, grab the family and split town. we headed to one of my favorite place....the City Of Angels! We got checked into our hotel and headed down to Santa Monica to wander the promenade, had dinner and the wife and girls went shopping.

So I follow the wife and girls into a store called LUSH. It was an interesting experience because when you walk into the shop it had a very strong scent that just wafted through the store. I will be honest I probably would not of gone in if it were not for the fact that i was the girls.

LUSH is a compnay that started in England with one mission and that is creating all natural, no chemicals and more importantly no animal testing. Everything is handcrafted. If you are a vegan or just concerned about where your products come from LUSH is the compnay for you to look into.

So as I am walking around the store I find a couple of shaving products so I grabbed considering I have posted more then once about handcrafted products. The DIRTY shaving cream came in a small container and the other called AMBROSIA came in a bottle. When I got back to the hotel I had to shave anyways so I used the AMBROSIA. The AMBROSIA is a light weight shaving cream perfect for people with sensitive skin with a scent of chamomile (do not worry it is not over powering). It has cocoa butter and linseed oil. It may not lather up super well but you will still get a very clean shave.

I grabbed the DIRTY Shaving cream because of the packaging hoping that it was going to be easily used with a shaving brush. The scent of this shaving cream is sandalwood and lavender (my wife loves sandalwood). I was hoping that with the product being in a "pot" kind of packaging working with a shave brush would be great but unfortunately you will not get a great lather. the good thing is that it does not take a ton to shave and with my experience the razor just glides over the skin.

After doing some reading about not only the products but the brand the reason you will not get a very good lather is because of the lack of ingredients that are in most normal shave products. I think this is what makes these such good products.

This is a brand I will encourage people who have sensitive skin, irritation issues, who really care about what they use or care how things effect the planet. LUSH is very active in charity and giving back.

If you can not find a LUSH store you can order online.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11023764758588611230noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7453521398143215703.post-7292956542476835052013-02-14T12:31:00.000-08:002013-02-14T12:36:02.720-08:00Man That's Alot Off Pomade!! So I follow a facebook group called "Addicted To Pomade" and it is kind of cool because it lets you see how many pomade brands are out there and man there are a lot! As I worked on the last post which was a review of Ivan Zoot's pomade and the Bona Fide pomade I got to thinking about being a kid.

I was using pomade back in junior high a pomade by DAX. I remember it being this green color and made with vegetable oil. It came in a plastic can with a metal lid. It was not the best smelling product in the world but it did the job

Then came the painful task of using Murray's (yeah you heard me...painful). I have used this off and on for many years now and my wife still hates it becuase it will be in my hair for days. That bright oragne can with the pomade you have to melt down to make usable. I learned quickly you better have a good brush and a blow dryer handy. You can not get more old school then this, but I was happy the day i found the Murray's light!

Then came Royal Crown Hairdressing. I am not even sure when I found this but it was awesome because all I had to do was put it and come it through. That is what I used in my hair on my wedding day and I still like using....high shine. I will be honest pomade back then never smelled the best, it was grease, oil and wax.

Layrite Pinup by id Stankovit

I had just started barber school when I got my first can of Layrite (courtesy of Don Hawley himself) and man was I grateful. held well and washed right out. I now had something that smelled good and worked well (I also got my pillowcases back).

I did not have Layrite, Suavecito or Hold Fast. I was so happy the day I got my first can of Laytite (and so was my wife). I am happy that companies have started putting out really good water based products but I am also happy to see people making there own pomades as well. It is cool to see so many different kinds, weights and scents becuase I did not have the options that people have now!

First of the year I received two packages one from "Clipper Guy" Ivan Zoot which had a sample of ZOOT! Hair pomade. I also received a couple of cans of pomade from the guys at Bona Fide.

Bona Fide hails from Orange County California which has become a hotbed for cool product (Layrite, Imperial and a few others). Water based pomade gets a lot of grief from fans of pomade becuase people do not call it pomade but a glorified gel. This is a statement that I do not agree with and personally I like water based pomades.

Used Bona Fide

The scent of Bona Fide is a fresh clean scent that is not over powering. Sometimes it is better then an overpowering sweet scent. The texture Bona Fide is smooth and easily malleable unlike some products that have the tendency to be stiff. It is easy to come through and restyle. In my experience it is not a super strong hold, more of a medium hold with a decent shine. the price point is about 12 bucks which is a good price. If you are a barber or a shop owner I think it is worth keeping around if you are looking for an inexpensive water based pomade.

Short cut used ZOOT! Hair pomade

Ok so I do not have packaging for the ZOOT! Hair pomade (like I said it was a sample), but it was enough of a sample to get a few cuts and styles out of it. This is not a water based pomade but it is not a super heavy pomade that is a pain in the butt to wash out at the end of the week. It has a minty scent but not that tea tree scent that most guys are used to getting in some other products. It has a smooth texture that is easy to use and easy to comb through. It has a lite to medium hold. If you are looking for a pomade to pile high that pomp this is not the best product. I found it works good for slick backs, side parts and just all around clean styling. It seems to have more of a matte finish so it is not s super high shine.

I have used both of these products on more textures hair and found that Ivan Zoots ZOOT! Hair pomade worked better on textured hair then the Bona Fide did. But in the end you will have to try them out for yourself and see what works the best.

On a completely seperate not the new "Support Your Local Barber" stickers are available and the shirts will be done soon!! If you are interested in either of these things hit me up!

Cheers,
That is life everyone is broke, paying off Christmas and waiting for tax season to get here. That is just the nature of the beast this time of year. So now it is all about trying to offer your customers to come in and spend that extra couple of bucks in your shops.

Pomades are on the rise but recently I was contacted by Ivan Zoot (Clipperguy) and asked if I would review it here. If you are unfamiliar with ZOOT! Products check it out and more inportantly make sure you get to know Ivan Zoot. So look for the review of ZOOT! pomade next week.

Everyone who knows me locally knows I support local business whether it is a local print shop, bar...etc. Last night a video short popped up on YouTube featuring Evan Boling owner of Boling's Barbershop in Downtown Visailia.

So if you are like me you are a fan of social media and I am not just talking about Facebook, Twitter...etc. One of my favorite sites is Bangstyle. This is a cool site because it is a
fashion culture site. It allows stylist to post there work, follow stylist and read some articles connected to fashion, music and more. If you have never seen it before check it out!

This weekend is the ISSE show in Long Beach and unfortunately I am not going to make it out this year. IF you read my blog I would love to get any reports from the show (products, educations and more).

I will leave it at that for now. Product reviews are coming this next week and if there is anything you would like to see covered this year please let me know.

Cheers

So if you missed out on our MOVEMBER kick-off event that I put together at GoldStar Barbershop come on out and join us for "Cuts,Shave & Rock n' Roll". I figured since MOVEMBER went so well that it was time to try another event. So I got a hold of a local dj, local brewery and got the ball rolling.

On Sat. February 23rd GoldStar Barbershop will re-open at 8 pm-11 pm. I am excited because even though Victor and myself will be cutting hair, doing some shaves and enjoying and evening of rock n' roll it is an opportunity create a social environment within the barbershop.

One of the things I have always beleived and liked about what we do is that barber culture is a very social culture. From how we interact with customers, the public and each other as barbers. I think the younger generation of barbers have taken the social element of barbering to the next level.

Hawleywoods's with there back room, Suavecito partnering with local barbers at a local Riverside bar or BOLT barber having late evening happy hour at the WeHo location. These are ways for us to make a couple of bucks beyond the regular day to day work but also just get together for a hell of a good time!

To all the shops that are doing things to open there doors to people who may not normally come in and just creating a social environment to there shops...Keep it up, cause I am always looking for a new place to have a beer!

Cheers!
So here it is the first post of the year and it has been a week of reflection because in September I have been a licensed barber for 6 years. So I am going to share my story so far.

The wife had been done with school for a few months by February of 2006 and it was at this point I decided to go to barber school in Spokane,WA. At this point I had been working at Hot Topic, as a dish washer and a line cook.

Spokane had one barber school in to go to and so Beth and I decided that if they had financial aid I could apply for school and so I did. The school had a barber program and a cosmetology but unfortunately I spent more time cutting womens hair then I did mens haircuts. I had a rough patch because of some family stuff. Oh yeah did I mention that the entire time I was in school I worked at HT and in a restaurant the entire time. I worked my butt off and finished school two weeks early oh yeah and I passed state board on the first try!

AZC Haircuts-2007

As soon as I passed first thing I did was quit one of my jobs. Telling Chef Brian I was leaving was actually tough because I have a lot of love and respect for him because he gave me a chance on the line I probably would never of had anywhere else. I stayed at Hot Topic as I was trying to find me a job in a barbershop.

First shop I worked at was called Dan's Barbershop but unfortunately I was not there for very long because they felt I was not very fast and my skills were not where they wanted. Second shop was called Weldon Barber. It is kind of a higher end barbershop owned by a family member of the Nordstrom. Here is the finny thing about this place the owner himself had me let go because I was a man with tattooed (at this time there were no other men working for them).

Well I was not in a shop when 2007 rolled around, still working at HT but cutting hair out of my house as often as I could until I was approached by an acquaintance who was opening a brand new barbershop. He had been an educator for American Crew at one point so I was going to rent a chair and hoped that this was going to be my chance to start developing my skills....Finally.

Hillyard Hootenany 2008

At this point I prematurely quit HT and within two months I was unemployed because a customer had come back to the shop because they were not happy with the haircut and the owner re-cut this persons hair. At this point I am told that "I had heart but not enough experience yet" he also said "It was his name and reputation on the shop".

Where do I go from here? What point do I just give up? In 2007 the family decided to return to California so I had to spend the rest of the year working my tail off to prepare to move back to the Golden State. I did go back to Spokane twice in the last 5 years since we have been back in California due to lack of work and our hope to return to Washington. But back in Spokane on each trip I found a way cut hair. Due to difference in state regulations and time it took me almost a year to get my California barber license.

More grease rags coming soon!

After getting my license in California I did what I needed to do to get take care of my family, but was fortunate to get involved with my friend Luis who owns Covenant Barbershop where he could let me fill a chair once in a while, partnered with them for the Fresno Tattoo Expo and just help out at times.

In September of 2011 I started seeing a classified show up on Craigslist and I jumped on it...I had been back from Washington since June (in time for my daughters high school graduation) and did not have anything left to loose. I interviewed and was offered a job which started when the shop opened in November of 2011. I am proud to say I have been standing behind a chair at GoldStar Barbershop since we opened in November of 2011.

Devoted Barber 2013

The road to get here has been a rough one. I have had many people ask me why I have not given up and it really comes down to one thing....I have found a trade that I take pride in. I love what I do. I have had friends and family continue to encourage me. Am I where I want to be? NO!! Will I get there? YEAH!!!

I have days where I feel like I still cut like I just got out of barber school. and sometimes maybe I do. I think most people at this point probably would have called it quits but I couldn't and I do not plan on it.

Do not ask me what is to come in the next 6 years. Heck I do not know what is going to happen in the week. I am going to just continue to stand behind a chair and work hard!

There are so many people I wish I could thank...family, friends other barbers who have all continued to encourage me. Thanks.

As we go into 2013 I wish all you young barbers, new barber students and everyone who makes behind the chair there home away from home....Have a great and successful year!!
This is not in any particular order or by event just some stuff that I have personally payed attention to over the year or been a part of..

The barber battle invade California!! These hugely popular events that have been going happening on the east coast for several years now are starting to take root in the Golden State. In Long Beach,Ca this past June was the 2012 International Beauty and Barber Expo. At this battle Ray Davila won for "freshest Fade" and "Tightest taper". Oh yeah did I mention he works at Hawleywoods in Long Beach.
2012 is the year I found The Dollar Shave Club. i am really sure when and where these guys came from but when there video started popping up and my Facebook, twitter and other random social networks I had to check it out. Well I guess that is it....There is probably a shit ton of stuff I could find on BING or Google, but all I can say is that all the barbers I know have worked there assess off for the last year keeping shops open, more people are showing interest in going to barber school to learn a proper trade. I want to thank all the barbers that out there that keep us motivated and looking encourage us to look at what we do as more of a craft then a job...Thanks.
It will only be available for purchase at Electric Haven Tattoo and Barbershop. As a fan of High Life I want to wish him continued success with Electric Haven Tattoo and Barbershop.

Shiner Gold Pomade hails from Phoenix,Arizona and yes this is a water-based pomade. The packaging is clean with the bushed metallic tin can with the black artwork. When you open the can you will find a bit of a clear pomade with what looks almost like an amber tint to it. The scent is a coconut that is not over powering, which is nice because coconut can sometimes be to much.

Now on to the hold...Like all water based pomades you really want to make sure you are using it on dry hair because it will affect the way it holds. When I used it I used it on clean, dry hair but found that by the end of my work day at the shop the hold was starting to fall. This is not a bad thing I just think it means I am going to have to use a little more then I used.

Now there is one issue I have and that is it is to similar to Grants Golden Brand Pomade out of Seattle, Washington.(see review here). So if you have used Grants then you are going to like Shiner Gold. The texture is a little lighter then that of Grants though.

From what I am seeing the feedback to Shiner Gold has been super and I wish them a great 2013...If they keep putting out good products they are going to have a long successful career.
So it is Christmas time and I have not been as busy as I would like to be. I know some shops keep wicked busy some do not but we all have to work hard during the holiday season so that our customers look sharp for Christmas pictures and time with the family.

I am going to be honest about something today. Last week was my birthday and I turned 39 and it was a tough week because not only was the shop I work in really slow and I was feeling like I was going nowhere in the shop I am in, not making enough money to provide for my family...etc.

Yesterday I had to take a step back and look at one of the above issues (I still got some things to figure out going onto the new year) and that is the amount of money I am making and this is what I realized and I think sometimes anyone in the service industry who also lives on our tips has to remember something. Sometimes we make little or no tips for 1 of three reasons 1) crappy service: I really hope this is not the issue for you because I know I work hard to make sure all my customers are happy. 2) Cheap Bastards!: Welcome to life. Sometimes there are just dudes out there who are just cheap and that is one of those things you can not change.3) We Are All In The Same Boat: The people that come into our shops and sit in our chairs they work just as hard as we do, raise families like we do and we have to appreciate each and every customer.

So as I finish this I would like to take a minute to thank every person who steps foot into our barbershop here in Visalia,Ca Thank you for your support and your patronage. We would not be who we are without you guys.

To all the barbers, all the shop out there who work there buts off to provide great service to there customer, take pride in there trade and still continue to love what they do......MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Another blog that makes sense as I type it...Cheers! Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11023764758588611230noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7453521398143215703.post-16402290976982349022012-12-06T11:37:00.000-08:002012-12-06T11:37:45.545-08:00The Devil Is In The Details So as a barber our job is to work to provide a great service to the guy sitting in our chair. The time in that chair should be more then the haircut but everything that goes with it. The conversation, the cut, the straight razor, the bay rum...everything.

The truth is it is easy to blow through a haircut and get them out of your chair and take there money and get the next person in your chair. Pushing people through the shop like this does not mean you are going to make more money. When this is how you work it makes it difficult to build those good barber/client relationships that you want to build. I beleive there is nothing wrong with not only giving a good haircut but a good experience in the shop

Just for the record I am not talking about taking almost 2 hours on a haircut but taking the time to give them a great cut and experience!

As a barber I do my best to hit all the small things....eyebrows, ears, razor to the neck, bay rum and the massage. These little details make a difference with most guys and even if the gentleman in your chair may not notice the little details you as the barber should still go out of your way for those little things.

In the end I think the small details are just as important as the haircut itself because we want them to be happy as they leave your shop and look forward to sitting in your chair again in a few weeks.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11023764758588611230noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7453521398143215703.post-51100894070260254382012-11-23T16:54:00.000-08:002012-11-23T16:54:08.027-08:00All The Cool Kids Use Instagram...The Final 5! Ok so I was going through my Instagram like I always do and realized I

What does Tommy Guns NY and Levels Barbershop have in common (and it is not that they are both from NY? Is it because they are both barbershop? Nope!

The one thing that these two barbershops that are so different from each othe have in common is that they have both been featured on reality television in the last few weeks.

If you watch Ink Masters on Spike then you will have seen Tommy Gun NY as they played host to the "Flash Challenge" a few weeks ago. The flash challenge was all about straigth lines. This week the tattoo artist had to put down the machines and pick up a different kind of machine....clippers. The tattoo artist had to do a design in the hair of their "human canvas"

I will be honest, this was kind of painful to watch because you can tell that some of these people do not know there wat around a set of clippers. At least it was an entertaining episode. To watch the full episode go to Spike TV.

Now on to Harlem which is home to Levels barbershop. Levels has made a name for itself as a top notch shop and a major player in the barber battle scene. Now enters Richard Hammond.

Most people will know Richard Hammon from the hugely successful BBC show Top Gear. He now has his own show called "Crash Course" where he steps into a job and tries to learn as much as he can in one day. Richard gets to spend a day at Levels.

He got to do a couple of haircuts starting with a "ceaser". he learned the differnce between a "light ceaser" and a "dark ceaser". The owner of Levels to him to a barber supply shop to get his own tools as well. When coming back to the shop they had him actually do a couple of Level regulars.

Kamal Nuru and the staff at Levels were definitely good sports and so was Richard because boy was he awkward!!

I get excited to see real barbershops on tv. Maybe time for me to pitch my barbershop idea to the Travel Channel. We will see!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11023764758588611230noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7453521398143215703.post-87671398028297518162012-11-17T13:23:00.000-08:002012-11-17T13:24:45.894-08:00All The Cool Kids Use Instagram...Part 1 Ok so I was going through my Instagram like I always do and realized I follow some cool people and some really good barber and tattoo artist so I got to thinking why not share a few of my favorite people, shops and tattoo artist that I follow on Instagram with all you guys. So my annoyance started last week when I went to the market to get some stuff for the wife to bake cupcakes and noticed that the aisle that holds all the holiday was already putting Christmas candy and they had not removed all the Halloween candy. At this moment I knew I was in trouble...I am never ready for the holidays, let alone Christmas!

This weekend I will be getting the shop hours for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years all figured out. Then I need to find some ways to get the regulars in but plus try to get some new heads in the door....Do not forget the gift cards, gotta hustle those gift cards!!!

It is Christmas time so that means get those Christmas cards together for your clients. Seriously, customers love Christmas cards especially if you are sending them something that no one else is. They appreciate those things. If you need a dope Christmas card to send to your clients contact my good friend Jeff Allison Trust me he does great work.

Does your shop offer gift cards/certificates if not you probably should because as I saw last holiday season they do sell well if you hustle them enough. They are easy to buy for dads and sons for stockings. Also try to put together some gift packs that you can sell as well (shave kits, pomade stets...etc.).

The truth is I hope everyone has a great and successful holiday season. Keep working hard, continue to give your customers your best.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11023764758588611230noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7453521398143215703.post-31894359152060039202012-11-08T11:27:00.000-08:002012-11-08T11:27:04.308-08:00Just One Of Those Days....How To Fix a Mistake We as barbers and stylist every now and then have one of those days where in the end you know you made a mistake. You get that phone call from a customer complaining about their haircut (you always hope they are polite about it, but more often then not they are usually on the rude side). Last night was one of those nights for me. My last haircut of the evening was a girl who came in asking for a faux hawk.

The question is how do you handle a disappointed customer? Dealing with an upset customer sometimes takes kid gloves because some people take a bad haircut personally. Some people (mainly guys) take a bad haircut with a grain of salt but others want it dealt with and quickly and more importantly I think upset customers want to make sure we as prefessionals are paying attention and listening to what they are asking for.

So here are my suggestions in dealing with a upset customer: 1) Listen to them! I get it, it is easy to just kind patronize them but make sure you know why they are upset. 2) Get Them Back in the chair. If you are the one who made the mistake do your best to get them back in YOUR chair so you are the one fixing your mistake and you can learn from your own mistake. If you can not get them back in your chair just make sure you get them back in your shop! 3) Do not forget to apologize. Sometime a sincere apology can go a long way. 4) This is my personal opinion so you do not have to agree with me on this one: Do not give them there money back! Offer them a discount to come back but the truth is we are trying to make a living, too! If you gave every person back there money who was not happy for one reason or another we would go broke! There are those out there that you just can not make happy.

In the end all we can do is our best and accept the fact that even the most experienced barber/stylist has an occasional bad haircut and we just have to treat our customers professionally.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11023764758588611230noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7453521398143215703.post-72289181309368350352012-11-04T22:26:00.000-08:002012-11-04T22:58:09.493-08:00MOVEMBER Kick-Off

So Thursday was one of my longest days ever. Started with having to be at the barbershop at 4 am to get ready for the local news channel who came by for the morning to cover the MOVEMBER.

We worked until around 5 pm and then closed up the shop to get ready for the MOVEMBER Kick-Off party and then opened the doors around 7:30. I did 5 shaves straight, Evan from Bolings Barbershop (Visalia,Ca.) also joined us for the festivities. He did 6 maybe 7 shaves. The owner did two haircut (for some reason) and shop apprentice did three shaves and three haircuts (again, for some reason). My buddy LJ Lara from Pizanos help me get a keg of New Belgium for the event and we had a ton of dope give-a-ways from Soapbox Gypsy and Pin-Ups Against Cancer and a few goodies from our own shop.

Movember & Sons-Frankie The barber with the Mclaughlin's

So in the end apart from a few small issues the whole night went well. People seemed to enjoy themselves and the fact that so many people came together in support of a good cause, listened to some great music and had a good time.

Someone asked me why I chose to do an event for MOVEMBER and the reason is that when there is a charity that not only effects so many men but that can be so closely tied to what we do as barbers you get involved. If you are interested in donating you still can by going to Team Barber Collective.

Thank you everyone who came and thank you for your support. Until next year!!

So things have been crazy. The barbershop has gone to commission so I am working my ass off a little more then normal. Trying to find ways to not only make money, get my name out there a little more and do some cool stuff in the community while I am here! Which leads me to November 1st.

I am excited to to be involved in MOVEMBER Campaign this year. my work is playing host to a Movember Kick-Off and Shave party. I really wanted to do this last year but the shop had just opened up, but this year I got on top things super early. The chance to do something for a good charity and hopefully help bring in some new business.

Tomorrow we are closing up shop early and we have a grooms party coming in for haircuts and shaves. The groom is getting married on Saturday. My boy Luis called me up today because he needed a hand with a grooms party on Saturday.

I am excited that I am going to be busy over the next couple of days because of guys getting married. I think guys getting married are an up-tapped source of income and more importantly getting the chance to take part in the most important day of a mans life (next to them having a kid). Salons always set up at bridal events maybe it is time for barbers/barbershops to show up at events to target men for weddings.

Well I am going to call it a night, maybe I will have some photos to post form the weekend. Keep working hard, take care of your clients and take pride in what you do!

Cheers! Efficiancy: It All Come In Time

Filling a chair at Covenant Barbershop

So today I want to talk about an issue that affects everyone in the hair industry (barbers and cosmos) and that is finding the fine line between speed and efficiency.

When I got out of barber school I knew one thing and that was to become the barber I wanted to become was going to take time and experience. Unfortunately right out of school it seemed like everywhere I was working was expecting me to be 100% on point but I was either to slow or just not very good yet.

When I moved back to California the first shop I worked at (I have only worked in a couple of shops since coming back to CA) was a chop shop. The shop only charged $4.50 so to make any money you had to work your ass off!! The guy who was cutting hair next to me would crank out 30+ haircuts in a day. Just because this guy was fast did not mean he was very good.

I have now been at my current shop almost a year and in the time I have found my speed get better in my haircuts but more importantly the quality of my haircuts have gotten better. Am I as good I would like to be...No. Will the time come where I want to be....Yes.

When you get out of school and get behind the chair realize that in time the speed will come but it is more important to work on efficiency because being able to do good haircuts or color is what is going to keep customers in your chair. The speed will come in time and you will begin to notice it.

On a final note....To the bosses, owners, master barbers, be patient with the new guy behind the chair because you used to be that kid. You never know you may have the next Ivan Zoot behind that chair!!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11023764758588611230noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7453521398143215703.post-31085213491947712432012-09-22T07:00:00.000-07:002012-09-22T07:00:00.451-07:005 Days of Pomade-Day 5: Jan Hella-The Rebel Rouser (So when deciding who I wanted to give us there top 5 list I knew that Jan Hella (barber student extraordinaire and in charge of www.theRebelRouser.com). I knew asking him I was not going to get a list but a full blog post, since that is how we roll! I really want to thank everyone who was involved in this, it has been a blast!)

Since the start of www.TheRebelRouser.com,
people from all over the world have asked me "what's your favorite
pomade?" Unfortunately, I don't have one! With the wide variety we
currently have on the market, as well as up and coming brands, it's hard
to pick a favorite. Throughout the duration of blogging, I've learned
to make certain pomades work best for me, more-so than the others. So,
here's my Top 5 Go-To Pomades:
(In no particular order.)

1)
Dax High & Tight Awesome Hold: A lot of people have somewhat turned
away from the heavier pomades; me included. So when I tried Dax High
& Tight Awesome Hold for the first time, I knew I found my preferred
alternative to their strongest pomade- Dax Wave & Groom- which used
to be my definite go-to, when I as looking for hold. Being just a kick
lighter, a lot more malleable, with a killer Sandalwood scent to boot,
Dax High & Tight Awesome Hold is a great addition to anyone's
arsenal, and can be found at www.ImperialDax.com

2)
Mr. Ducktail: If the name doesn't sound familiar, you probably haven't
been doing this for too long. But, no worries, that's what we're here
for! Long story short, Mr. Ducktail is an amazing barber from France,
that has moved shop to England, and still has cult following, for his
barbering & styling skills, as well as his pomade! His grease is a
medium weight pomade, that is seemingly lighter than most, but still
manages to style amazing pompadours, as seen on his Facebook page. Plus,
it smells like a cola, how can you go wrong with that? Available at www.HairgumUSA.com

3)
Royal Crown Pomade: One, if not, THEE pomade that keeps
Elvis-Pompadour-Enthusiasts in limbo, it's hard to not have a tin or
five in hand! With many pomades getting heavier and heavier, light and
greasy pomades are being left behind. Think about it folks, if quite
possibly Elvis used it, why shouldn't we! Being thicker, with a much
more pleasant scent than its readily available counterpart- Royal Crown
Hairdressing- Royal Crown Pomade is definitely the better of the two to
pick up. Unfortunately, it's not often you will see the pomade next to
the hairdressing. So when you come across it, BUY IT!

4) Grant's
Golden Brand: Now, I'm not going to get into the whole, "water-based
pomades are not grease!!!" Well, no shit. Grease + Water = DUH. But,
Grant's has been one brand that doesn't only offer a range of
water-based pomades, but amazing customer service. It's hard to go wrong
with either of their products. Plus, they keep moving forward, and have
more products on the way! Check em out at www.GrantsGoldenBrand.com

5)
Tres Flores: As I've mentioned- light and greasy pomades are being left
behind, and Tres Flores is one of them! While it leaves some with a bad
taste in their mouths, it leaves many with fond memories of their
fathers and grandfathers, barbershops, or even sketchy times... You know
who you cats are! This stuff is as close to a classic pomade as you're
going to get, aside from Royal Crown, of course.) Light, relatively
thick, and most definitely greasy, this stuff is definitely worth having
on hand, even if you just use it to add shine to a heavier pomade.
Should be found at Mexican markets, CVS, or Asian Supermarkets.

Well,
folks, I hope you enjoyed this little tidbit of my go-to's. Hopefully,
you'll add some of these to your rotation and find some joy in em.
Until the next time,
Pomp Hard!

It's impossible to find ANY on the
East Coast unless you go into the major cities...Philly, DC,
NY....that's why I carry so many. Sometimes you get lucky but most times
you have to order online.
Top five:
1. Dax
2. Dr. Rubens
3. High Life (Adam makes it impossible to order - no wholesale)
4. American Greaser Supply
5.
Suavecito (I hate to include a water-based pomade but this stuff can
compete with any petro-based pomade. It's cheap, good customer service
and it takes about 1.5 days from order to doorstep)
